An original work by one of the most distinctive voices in Argentine modern art.

Born in Buenos Aires in 1930, Juan Manuel Sánchez was a painter, muralist and engraver whose career was deeply connected to the development of socially committed Argentine figurative art. In 1959, he became one of the founding members of Grupo Espartaco, alongside artists including Ricardo Carpani and Mario Mollari. The group sought to create a distinctly Latin American art with strong social and human themes.

Throughout his career, Sánchez evolved from the powerful social realism of his Espartaco years toward an increasingly personal language of simplified forms, strong contours and expressive human figures. In his later work, the female figure and the human body became recurring and important subjects.

His work has been exhibited internationally and is held in collections of museums and institutions in Argentina and abroad. Sánchez received numerous awards and distinctions during his career, including the Premio Cecilia Grierson at the Salón Nacional de Artes Plásticas in 1988. In 2012, he was declared a Distinguished Cultural Personality of Buenos Aires.
