A graceful white ceramic pitcher holds vibrant purple irises and a golden-yellow bloom, while additional flowers, glass vessels, and muted architectural forms create a richly layered composition.

About the Artist

José Luis Menghi (1904–1985) was an Argentine painter associated with the artistic community of La Boca, Buenos Aires, a neighborhood renowned for its vibrant cultural life and important contribution to Argentine art.

Born in Buenos Aires on July 28, 1904, Menghi was introduced to artistic practice by his maternal grandfather, Fortunato Debenedetti, a decorator and restorer of religious imagery. He subsequently studied with painter Adolfo Montero and became involved with the artists and intellectual circles surrounding the La Boca art movement.

For more than three decades, Menghi worked as a blacksmith and electrician while continuing to pursue his artistic vocation. In 1927, a fire destroyed his studio and the entire body of work he had produced up to that point. Despite this devastating setback, he persevered and went on to develop a distinguished artistic career, holding more than twenty solo exhibitions from 1941 onward.

His paintings are particularly admired for their intimate atmosphere, delicate color harmonies, and poetic depictions of flowers, still lifes, humble interiors, and urban landscapes. His artistic language combines a warm, restrained palette with expressive yet carefully considered drawing.

Menghi received numerous distinctions throughout his career, including major awards at Argentine national and provincial exhibitions. He died in Avellaneda, Buenos Aires Province, on February 25, 1985, leaving a lasting contribution to the artistic heritage of La Boca and Argentine figurative painting.
